In Chapter 1, players explore a shuttered toy factory. It made Poppy and other toys. Former Playtime Co. employee checks on factory as player.
Decades ago, the toy manufacturer closed. It's been abandoned since. Not due to insolvency or business issues. Playtime Co. Toy Factory is shuttered indefinitely because workers disappeared. The player-controlled character only becomes a toy after receiving a message from the disappeared crew ten years ago.
The opening chapter indicates that the children's toys are experiments. This means the factory's missing workers are converted into violent toys. Poppy Playtime developers haven't confirmed this, thus these are rumors. That's not impossible. The VHS tapes players acquire reveal many of the factory's secrets.
