Absolutely critical. As it is for any business.
My biggest spend is on marketing.
For every dollar I spend recording an album, I spend two to three in marketing.
A $5000 recording budget (which is small) - $10,000-$15,000 in the marketing
In the past major labels would spend 10x the cost of recording to market the album.
I’ve seen major labels do weird things though (mostly because the music industry is a bunch of clueless people all with their hand in the pot) and spend $100,000 to make a video and album, but only spend $5,000 on the marketing—which I can guarantee means the artist’s album will flop.
Most indie artists will budget around $2500 to cut a professional EP (2–4 songs in most cases) and then spend next to nothing on marketing, thinking that posting “hey check out my new album” on social media will get them a return on their investment and then wonder why they can’t get more than 20 people to a show, and have a garage full of CDs they can’t sell—no marketing!
